Autumn Flowers

Chrysanthemums are definitely the most popular flowers for fall displays. They’re available in almost every color you can imagine, and they bloom in several varieties. Since they’re in-season in autumn, potted varieties continue to bloom well beyond Thanksgiving Day. In addition to chrysanthemums, we also love pretty clusters of blooming kalanchoe, goldenrod, lantana, sunflowers, and marigolds for outdoor fall decorating.

Fall Foliage

Brightly colored autumn flowers are only made more beautiful by the contrasting deep green of leafy green autumn plants. Nestle your flowers among a mix of red and yellow mottled croton plants and the dark purples and greens of potted kale.

Festive Front Door

Your front door should be the focal point of your entire autumn design. So be sure to highlight it well. You can draw guests’ attention to your home’s main entrance by hanging a basket of freshly picked hospitality or an elegant autumn wreath featuring fall foliage and embellishments like miniature pumpkins. If your door’s design won’t accommodate hanging anything directly from it, you can still accent it with a seasonal garland draped above the doorframe.

Pumpkin Pretties

No fall decorations or display will be complete without the addition of at least one pumpkin. The addition of several pumpkins and also gourds, however, is even better! Gather a variety of pumpkins and gourds in different shapes, sizes, colors, and textures to create visually interesting groups. You can use them to line your walkway, add pops of color to each of your steps, or to adorn your front door.

We recommend leaving your pumpkins intact, instead of carving them up for Halloween, because they’ll last much longer. If you still want your pumpkins to be more playful, try painting them with cute prints or seasonal critters. Spray them metallic colors for a more elegant look. You can even paint a few with your house numbers in bold to help guests find their way to your home.

Cozy Cushions

Don’t put your outdoor furniture into storage just yet! You can extend your enjoyment of the outdoors into autumn by switching out summery pillows and cushions for textiles more appropriate for the chill of fall. Look for cushions and pillows upholstered in flannel or wool featuring autumn colors and prints like plaids in cinnamon, honey, navy, and forest green. Add a couple of cozy blankets to encourage snuggling up with mugs of hot apple cider.
